DRUIDS OF BRITAIN CONVERT TO CHRISTIANITY

druids

Extending back into the 17th century, there is a long English fascination with the druids of ancient Britain. This print depicts a dramatic fantasy, as several druids are confronted by an onrushing bishop and his priest who brandishes a cross in a classic pose meant to ward off evil. Is that a dead baby in the arms of the woman? A cow is sacrificed in the background while the head druid in an oak tree brandishes a sickle and a sprig of mistletoe.

Suffice to say the reality of Celtic druids begins with an understanding that they combined the roles of cult priest, secretary of state to the king and master of mysteries to whom only a few chosen initiates would have access. A sacred alphabet and tree lore formed the foundation of their esoteric knowledge. Sanctified groves of giant oak trees were sites for ceremonies and ritual and are documented in Celtic Britain and Gaul. Poems, long and short, incantations, eulogies and epics were their archives and repositiories of knowledge. See Master Poets and Their Kings To further complicate real history, the Romans may have invaded Britain first and foremost to gain control of the Irish gold trade, which crossed Britain west to east from Wales (Anglesey) and was controlled by the druids of the region.
